You Are Not Expected to Arrive Ready

Most people who contact us are not completely sure which class fits, what their first visit will be like, or whether they are physically prepared.

They may worry that they are out of shape, that the class will be too intense, or that they will look out of place because they have no idea what they are doing.

That is normal.

That’s why we built a system specifically for beginners.

Your first step is not to prove that you belong. It is to tell us what you are interested in, what concerns you, and what you hope to get from training.

We will help with the rest.

You bring the questions. We provide the structure.

Beginners Should Not Be Left to Figure It Out

Most beginners do not struggle because they lack ability or discipline. They struggle because they are introduced to training without a clear starting point.

At many gyms, beginners are:

  • Placed into classes they are not prepared for.
  • Taught random techniques with no structure.
  • Expected to mimic experienced students instead of receiving real coaching.
  • Thrown into unrestricted sparring before they understand the basics.

That leads to confusion, frustration, and people quitting before they ever have the chance to see meaningful progress.

We built Deep Water to fix that.

At Deep Water, beginners start in a defined program, receive active coaching, and build understanding before more complexity and pressure are added.

We also schedule first-time visitors carefully so coaches can give new students and current students the attention they need.

The goal is not to remove the challenge. It is to give you a real way to meet it.

WHERE BEGINNERS START

Three Clear Starting Paths

Deep Water offers several forms of martial arts training, but complete beginners enter through three primary pathways.

You do not have to decide which one is right on your own.

Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Adults who are new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu begin in Adult Intro.

The program teaches the foundational positions, movements, decisions, and training habits needed before the pace and pressure increase.

Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Children ages 6–9 and 10–14 begin in Kids Fundamentals.

Every child starts by developing the foundational skills, focus, behavior, attention, and training habits needed for long-term progress.

Striking

Beginners interested in Boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, or general striking begin in Striking Intro.

You do not need to choose between Boxing and Muay Thai before starting. Striking Intro develops the stance, movement, mechanics, defense, control, and training habits that support both.

Interested in MMA?

MMA is an advanced training destination, not a direct beginner enrollment program.

Complete beginners first build the necessary foundation through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and striking. We will help you determine which discipline should become your first step.

What Should You Wear and Bring?

Clothing

Adults and children should wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows them to move freely.

Avoid clothing with zippers, exposed metal pieces, or anything that could scratch a training partner.

Water

Bring water for yourself or your child.

Striking Equipment

Bring boxing gloves if you already own them, but gloves are not required for your first striking class.

Arrival Time

Please arrive approximately 10–15 minutes early.

This gives you time to complete the waiver, ask any immediate questions, and be ready when instruction begins.

Prefer to Watch First?

You are welcome to observe a class before participating if you are not yet comfortable trying one.

Contact us so we can help arrange the right class to watch.

Parents and Kids’ Trial Classes

Parents are welcome to watch during their child’s trial class. After enrollment, regular classes are student-only so children can focus, build confidence, and become comfortable participating on their own.

Your Trial Is a Real Class, Not a Sales Presentation

You will experience the same organized instruction our students receive.

A coach will welcome you, show you where to go, and guide you through the class. The material will be demonstrated clearly, broken into manageable steps, and practiced with coaching and correction.

Depending on the lesson, the class may include controlled partner practice with a specific goal. This gives you a chance to apply what you are learning without being thrown into full-out sparring.

You will not be expected to know the terminology, keep pace with experienced students, or prove how tough you are.

You are there to learn and experience what training at Deep Water actually feels like.

The Best Way to Evaluate an Academy Is to Experience the Coaching

A website can explain our approach.

Your first class lets you see how the room is organized, how instruction is delivered, and whether coaches are actively helping students improve.

Takes 30 seconds. No experience needed.

Still Unsure? That’s Normal.

“I’m Out of Shape.”

You do not need to get in shape before starting.

Training will challenge you, but your job in the first class is to learn. Fitness develops through consistent participation.

“I Don’t Want to Look Stupid.”

You are not expected to arrive knowing the terminology, movements, or rules.

Coaches expect beginners to be beginners. We will show you what to do and coach you through it.

“I Don’t Know Whether I Want BJJ or Striking.”

You do not need to decide alone.

Tell us what interests you, what concerns you, and what you hope to accomplish. We will help you choose the right first class.

“I’m Nervous About Sparring.”

Beginners are not simply thrown into full-out sparring.

Pressure and resistance are introduced in controlled ways. Some classes may include partner practice with a limited goal, but the coach will decide what makes sense for the lesson and your experience level.

“I Would Rather Watch First.”

You are welcome to observe before participating.

Contact us so we can help arrange the right class to watch.

You’ll Understand the Next Step Before You Decide

After your trial, we’ll talk with you at the academy or follow up afterward to go over:

What you want to get from training

The starting program we recommend and why

Pricing and membership terms

Any questions you still have

What the next step would look like

We won’t ask you to choose a membership before we explain what we recommend, what it includes, and why it makes sense for you.

You will have the information you need before deciding whether to continue.

After your first class, we’ll explain how it works and help you decide whether it makes sense for you.
